Small Business Marketing Mistake

At one time I owned a vending business. I started it from
scratch, built it up to something that would support my family,
ran it for a few years and then sold it for a nice profit.

I learned a lot of lessons from that experience here’s one
that you can adopt and adapt.

Don’t sell prevention solve a problem!

In the vending business there is always someone trying to come
up with a new idea to either sell a machine, a location, or a
product. On a regular basis some one is pushing healthy food
that can be sold in a vending machine.

They proclaim how much money you will make selling to the hungry
health conscious mass of customers.

I’ve known a number of newbies in the vending business that have
gotten sucked into this dream and it has never worked out.

People that buy from vending machines aren’t looking for health
food they are looking for junk food. They want to buy chocolate,
the want the sugar fix, they want the treat they don’t have at
home, they want something sweet to go with a cup of coffee, they
want the midmorning high.

The bottom line is we are not looking for a healthy solution. We
all know that we shouldn’t eat junk, we all know we need to lose
weight, we also know that a snickers bar is going to taste better
than an apple!

People are very busy, they are not thinking about prevention
they are just living their busy lives. The only time you look
for prevention is when it’s to late. You already have the problem,
so now you need a cure or a fix to that problem.

Do you think most people buy virus protection for their computer
the first time before or after they have a problem?

Are most people looking for a way to prevent cancer before they
get it?

Yes there is a market for prevention, but it is very small compared
to the market for solving problems. Sell the solution to problems
and you will be a lot more successful.
